When there is a health change and there is no understanding of it, there is fear of the unknown. Patients come afraid, which can be due to the language barrier but also the lack of understanding. Our underrepresented community is deficient in health knowledge which affects their care, needs, and treatment outcomes. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has plenty of terminology that can overwhelm the interpreter, as well as the patient. Professional development is key for the interpreter because it helps them be more prepared. When the interpreters know the background and terminology of the disease, they can deliver a message that is complete and accurate. This CKD class will not only help the interpreter learn the terminology, disease and treatment, but also guide them during complicated encounters.
