The thyroid gland plays a vital role in regulating many of the body's essential functions, including metabolism, energy production, growth, development, and much more. Thyroid disorders are common and can affect patients throughout different stages of life, so interpreters often encounter related medical terminology.

This presentation provides an overview of the endocrine system, focusing on thyroid anatomy and function. Participants will review how the endocrine system functions as the body's chemical communication network and how endocrine function changes throughout life; exploring thyroid conditions, such as hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's disease, along with their causes, risk factors, signs, symptoms, and commonly used terminology.

Participants will be able to apply this knowledge to their role as a medical interpreter, focusing on how an informed understanding of thyroid anatomy, physiology, diseases, and vocabulary can support accurate, complete, and impartial interpretation. The goal is not to diagnose or provide medical advice, but to equip interpreters with the background knowledge necessary to facilitate effective communication between patients and providers.
